Morgenster Estate: a Historical Treasure

The 300-year-old Morgenster Estate is situated near the foothills of the Helderberg Mountain in Somerset West and is renowned for its award-winning Bordeaux-style red wines and extra virgin olive oil.

The Homestead’s six perfectly proportioned gables are acknowledged in the historical records of Cape Dutch architecture. The front ‘holbol’ gable, with its delicate scrollwork and scallop shell apex framing the morning star, is considered one of the finest existing examples of baroque style in the Cape, and has been adopted as the Morgenster logo.

Apart from olive trees, the Morgenster hillside boasts the classic red grape varietals, Merlot, Cabernet sauvignon and Cabernet franc, Petit Verdot and more recently, the Italian varietals Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. At harvest time the grapes are picked and transported to the state-of-the-art wine cellar. Morgenster specialises in red wine cultivars and their forte lies in blending.

On arrival at the farm, follow the brick road to the Revel Fox-designed Tasting Room on the banks of a lovely reed-lined dam. Bird-life abounds and grey herons in flight can often be seen silhouetted against the majestic Helderberg mountain.

Comfortable seating on the vine-covered verandah will entice you to linger a little longer while you take in the beautiful surroundings. Indoors, guests are seated at the Monk’s table where you will be guided through a wine or olive product tasting. Cooking tips are shared and wine and food pairing ideas imparted.

A large fireplace warms the body while our Bordeaux-blended red wines warm the heart and comfort the soul in winter.
